Gymnázium Vysoké Mýto (Secondary Grammar School)
Gymnázium Vysoké Mýto is a state school providing general secondary education for talented children who want to go on their studies at universities and colleges. There are 12 classes at school and in each class there are about 30 students. Students can study at gymnázium after passsing entrance exams.
There are two types of studies:
- eight-year gymnázium – from the age of 11 to 19
- four-year gymnázium – from the age of 15 to 19
Both types of studies are finished by passing a graduation exam, which is required by all universities and colleges. The graduation exam is taken from four subjects: Czech language and one foreign language are compulsory and the two other subjects are optional and are usually chosen from other languages, science subjects and other humanities.
The school building
Gymnázium in Vysoké Mýto was founded in 1879. In the school building there are classrooms, special labs for computer studies, physics, history, chemistry, biology, music, fine arts, and languages. There are also two gyms and a bodybuilding gym. Students can borrow books from the school library. Next to the school there is a sports ground where students can play basketball and volleyball.
Education
The curriculum is based on general subjects such as Czech language, maths, social science, history, geography, etc. Students can study a lot of foreign languages. All the students study English as their first foreign language. Then at the age of 13, they can choose from German and French and study them as a second language. In upper classes students have an opportunity to enlarge their knowledge in various seminars (history, social science, maths, biology, physics, and chemistry) and in foreign language conversations.
Extra curriculum activities
Students can attend various clubs and they also take part in various competitions like chess tournaments, Sudoku tournaments, competitions in foreign languages or science competitions. Educational school trips to foreign countries are very popular. Students can go to England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. Students can also take part in international exchanges - the latest exchanges were that with Mädchen Realschule, Neumarkt, Germany (meeting in Neumarkt, meeting in Vysoké Mýto) and that with Gimnazjum Ozorków, Poland (meeting in Ozorków, meeting in Vysoké Mýto)
International Projects
The students of Gymnázium Vysoké Mýto participate in a lot of international projects. Especially eTwinning projects are very popular and successful - eleven of them have been awarded Quality Labels, the latest of them were the project "weRhere2eat", the project Stories in history (which was the runner up in the European competition in 2014) , the project European teenagers´lifestyle and the project An old neighbour and new friend. The project Getting Closer which was also awarded 1st Czech National Price in March 2010. As you can see, Gymnázium Vysoké Mýto is not only a possibility how to get good education; it’s a school with good conditions for developing creative abilities of students.
